You’ve set the goal. You know what you want. You’ve maybe even told a few people about it so you’d feel accountable.
And then nothing happens. Or things start moving and then mysteriously stop. Or you get close and then somehow self-destruct right before the finish line.
This is one of the most frustrating human experiences. Because from the outside it looks like a lack of effort. From the inside it feels like something is holding you back that you can’t quite name.
That something has a name. It’s a mental block. And with the right tools from NLP training and mind management, it can actually be found, understood, and cleared.
Mental Blocks Are Not a Character Flaw
The first thing to understand is that mental blocks aren’t a sign of weakness. They’re a sign that your subconscious mind has a different agenda from your conscious goals.
Here’s a simple example. A manager in her mid-40s comes to coaching. She wants a promotion. She’s smart, capable, well-regarded by her team. But every time she’s up for a bigger role, she backs away. She delays. She finds reasons it’s “not the right time.”
In one session, it comes out that as a child she watched her father get promoted and completely disappear into work. She decided somewhere along the way that success means losing the people you love. She never said this out loud. She didn’t even know she believed it. But it was running her decisions for years.
That’s how mental blocks work. They operate quietly. They feel like rational choices. They rarely announce themselves.
The Most Common Blocks That Show Up in High Performers
Not all blocks look the same. Some are loud and obvious. Most aren’t.
Fear of success. Sounds strange but it’s more common than fear of failure. Success brings visibility, expectation, and change. For people who grew up in environments where standing out wasn’t safe, the brain learns to avoid it.
Imposter syndrome. The persistent feeling that you’re not as capable as people think, and that eventually someone is going to figure that out. High achievers deal with this more than you’d expect.
Secondary gain. This is a big one in NLP. The idea that staying stuck is actually giving you something. Safety. Sympathy. Avoiding responsibility. The block exists because some part of you benefits from it.
Limiting beliefs about identity. Things like “I’m not a person who finishes things” or “I’m not cut out for that level.” These aren’t facts. They’re conclusions formed at some point in life and then treated as facts ever since.
How NLP Training Finds What’s Actually Going On
NLP training works on the structure of inner experience. Not just the story you tell about yourself, but how that story is held in your mind.
One of the tools it uses is submodalities. These are the fine details of how you represent something internally. When you think about a goal you’re excited about, the mental image is probably bright, close, vivid. When you think about something that feels impossible, the image is probably dim, distant, maybe even blurry or still.
By changing those internal qualities, you actually change how your brain processes the experience. The goal that felt out of reach starts to feel closer. Not because you’ve convinced yourself of anything. Because the representation itself has changed.
This is one of the things that makes NLP different from regular coaching or journaling. It doesn’t ask you to think differently. It changes the way thinking works at a structural level.
Timeline Therapy® and Getting to the Root
Most mental blocks have a starting point. A specific moment, or series of moments, where a belief was formed or an emotion got lodged and never properly resolved.
Timeline Therapy®, developed by Tad James, works with your internal timeline to locate these root events and release the emotional charge attached to them. The process doesn’t ask you to relive painful memories in detail. It works at a higher level, which is actually what makes it effective without being retraumatising.
Take someone who has tried three businesses and each one failed at a similar stage. It would be easy to say they’re not an entrepreneur. But in many cases there’s a specific emotional pattern driving the same result repeatedly. Timeline Therapy® goes to where that pattern started, clears it, and the external behaviour often shifts without the person having to consciously force anything.
This is why it’s included in the 5-in-1 certification alongside NLP, NLP Coaching, Hypnosis, and Energy Management. Some blocks need a surface-level tool. Some need to go much deeper.
“The goals you keep abandoning are the evidences your brain is using to set your beliefs and your identity. To have newer outcomes you will need newer evidences.”
— Naureen Ansari
Hypnosis: Talking to the Part That Doesn’t Listen to Logic
There’s a reason you can read every self-help book ever written and still find yourself doing the same thing. Books work on the conscious mind. The block usually isn’t there.
Hypnosis gets past the critical, analytical layer of the mind and works directly with the subconscious. In a relaxed, focused state, new patterns can be introduced at the level where the old ones actually live. It’s not suggestion in the way people imagine it from films. It’s precise, intentional, and repeatable.
A coach with a proper coach certification who uses hypnosis alongside NLP training has a completely different range of options for a stuck client. Because they’re not limited to what the client can consciously articulate. They can work with what the client can’t yet see.
Energy Management: The Block Nobody Talks About Enough
Not every block is psychological in origin. Some of them are energetic.
Energy management in a coaching context is about understanding how your energy state affects your capacity to move toward goals. Someone who is chronically depleted, running on stress hormones, and never properly recovering doesn’t just feel tired. Their decision-making suffers. Their risk tolerance drops. Their ability to hold a clear vision of what they want gets foggy.
Think about a business owner juggling operations, team issues, client demands, and a side project. She’s technically motivated. She wants the goal. But she’s so energetically stretched that the goal feels like one more thing to carry rather than something worth moving toward. The block isn’t in her mindset. It’s in her resources.
Energy management teaches you to be intentional about what you’re bringing into your interactions, your work, and your decision-making. When your energy is clean and directed, you make different choices. You see what’s possible differently. You stop avoiding things not because you forced yourself but because the block literally can’t sustain itself.
This is part of why the Mind Management Coaching Certification Program includes energy management as one of its five pillars. Because you can’t sustainably change your mind while ignoring the state of your energy.
Reframing the Block Itself
One of the most useful things NLP training does is teach you to see a block not as the enemy but as information. Every block is pointing at something. A fear. A belief. A need that isn’t being met some other way.
Reframing is the NLP technique that changes the meaning you give to an experience without changing the experience itself. Instead of “I keep failing at this” the frame shifts to “my mind is telling me something important that I haven’t addressed yet.”
That’s not denial. It’s a more accurate read of what’s actually going on. And from that frame you can start asking better questions and taking different action.
What Working on This Actually Looks Like
It’s not linear. That’s worth saying upfront.
Sometimes one session of Timeline Therapy® removes a block that has been sitting there for fifteen years and the shift is immediate. Sometimes it takes longer and the work is more gradual. Sometimes the first thing to address is energy management because the person is so depleted that no other tool will land properly yet.
What all of it has in common is that it goes below the surface. Below the goal-setting and the vision boarding and the morning routines. To the actual architecture of how you think, what you believe, and how your inner world is organised.
That’s the work. And it’s worth doing.
The Mind Management Coaching Certification Program is a 5-in-1 internationally accredited certification covering NLP, NLP Coaching, Timeline Therapy®, Hypnosis, and Energy Management. It’s built for people who want to do this work themselves and help others do the same.
If your goals keep stalling at the same point, it’s not the goal. It’s what’s underneath it.
